A directory will consist of searchable listings for example cars, boats, bookings items for sale etc. These searchable listings can have their own categories which can be searchable. View article on setting up searchable categories.

In a directory we will also have profiles which are members be it businesses or individuals that will add and manage their listinsgs. These profiles will also have their own categories and are independant of the listings categories although in some cases they may be similar.

Think of categories more of as tags as their is no limit to the amount of categories that can be attached to a listing or profile. The more refined the setup of categories the more relevant the search will be. Up to 5 drop down lists can be made available for searching on both listings and profiles.
